Which Fonts Can I Use? HTML versus Image

Because very few fonts are supported across all email clients, your choice of fonts is rather limited in the email world.

In Wysija, the Styles tab offers these email safe fonts:

Arial Black isn’t supported across all email clients. We included it because most email clients will show it.

Here’s the list, if you need to copy it for some reason:

  • Arial
  • Arial Black
  • Comic Sans MS
  • Courier New
  • Georgia
  • Impact
  • Tahoma
  • Times New Roman
  • Trebuchet MS
  • Verdana

Images as titles

In our own newsletters, we are able to use our own favorite fonts because they are actually an image. In other words, what you see is not text, but a jpg file.

To get this result, you need to know Photoshop, unfortunately.

Most of the fonts used in our Photoshop file are from Google Web Fonts or dafont.com.

The lowdown

More than 50% of email clients don’t show your newsletter’s images by default. If you forget to put an alternative text, it will look like this:

No title showing

Not too good is it?

Spam filters themselves dislike emails that have too many images and not enough text.

Our honest opinion: if you can handle Photoshop and make a few headlines as images, great. Otherwise, stick to HTML. Your font choice will be limited, but you’ll be readable by everybody.
